i have a question, do you have an answer?

Here is a question that I've been toying with all day.

Is my character defined by my actions?

Or are my actions defined by my character?

Think about this for a minute. The implications are pretty deep. Ask yourself this question and if you find an answer that you like, ask yourself these questions:

What are the results of my conclusion?

What would the results be for the opposite conclusion?

I have some thoughts, and I fully intend to post them, but not today. Besides, I'm really curious to know what you think. So for all of you people who just casually stop by my blog without interacting...here's your chance. Stop and write down your thoughts in the comment box, or send me an email and let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Great questions! I would have to say that I think our actions are more defining in this is scenario, but I also think it is something of a trick question (wink).

I think our choices (more than actions) more define our character AND reflect our character. The reason I would put more emphasis on the will is that I think it is one of the critical aspects of our natures that reflect being created in God's image- the ability to make free will choices.

I can't wait to hear what you think!

Peace,
Jamie

Really great question, April!

Can I go with a both/and on this one? It seems like our actions are an outworking of our character, but through the process of sanctification (if you're a Christian, at least. Or really on any sort of search for 'self-actualization' that embraces a traditional notion of 'good')our character is constantly being transformed. Which sometimes means we act in certain ways despite our character, but hoping that our character will be shaped by choosing positive action. Does that make sense?
